“Free yourself from mafia” tells Pope Francis in Ostia, Italy.

In occasion of the Corpus Christi feast Mass and subsequent procession, traditionnaly held in the center of Rome, pope Francis decided to move the event to Ostia to show solidarity with anguished and frightened residents.

From the step of a working-class parish, he talked about “omerta”, referring to the code of silence organized crime groups  impose on their memebers and the fear they use as a tool to keep others grom talking to police.

Ostia was once a quiet and tranquil seaside community outside Rome that has become a power center of mafia violence and political corruption. Pope Francis encouraged residents to break free from “the moorings of fear and depression,” telling them “you have experienced painful situations”.
